Toilet paper is becoming increasingly damaging for the health and
environment of the United States. To minimize the adverse effects of
toilet paper production on the environment, the government should
regulate and set a limit on the levels of water and virgin wood pulp
usage by toilet paper producing companies. In addition, businesses
should also spread awareness concerning the health and environmental
impacts due to toilet paper usage and should promote the bidet as an
alternative. While the bidet has various positive aspects, the use of
toilet paper is deeply engraved into the American hygienic culture.
Although this may be a topic rarely discussed publicly, “bidets are all
over Asia, so there’s probably some market demand,” from those who are
culturally used to the bidet, thus presenting the social stigmas and
uncomfort present in society (Goldstein 38). These social and cultural
aspects of life without toilet paper may limit the growth of
implementing bidets in the personal hygiene routines of the population.
For building a more eco-friendly, cost-effective, and hygienic
alternative the utilization of the bidet should be encouraged in the
United States.
